Costs to the Host Employer

Based on the minimum Ordinary wage rates to apprentices specified above the hourly rates invoiced weekly to the host employers are as follows, excluding GST:

Level 1 $16.80  From commencement of Level 1 training
Level 2 $18.40  From commencement of Level 2 training
Level 3 $20.00  From commencement of Level 3 training
Level 4 $21.60  On completion of all requirements for the award of a National Certificate in Plumbing or Gasfitting
Level 5 $23.20 On completion of all requirements for the second of these National Certificates

The above rates are effective from 29 March 2010.  If a host employer chooses to pay above the minimum wage set for each of these levels, then the charge out rate is also at a higher rate.

The charge out rate is 1.6 times the apprentice's wage rate. This multiplier is because the host employer only pays for the time that the apprentice is actually working for them.  This is around 40 or 41 weeks of the year - after allowing for 4 weeks Annual Leave, other training courses, any time off sick or for bereavements and, depending on the level of training, either 3 or 4 weeks of block courses.

The apprentice is however paid by the Trust for all 52 weeks of the year.

The charge out rates for the minimum Flat wage rates equivalent to the minimum Ordinary Rates are as follows, excluding GST:

Level 1 $17.27
Level 2 $18.91
Level 3 $20.56
Level 4 $22.20
Level 5 $23.84

Charge out rates for Overtime. For Apprentices on Ordinary wage rates any overtime that is worked after the first 8 hours each day is charged out at 1.3 times the agreed overtime rate.

Charge out rates for Wages above $14.50. If the Apprentice is paid an Ordinary Rate of more than $14.50 an hour or the equivalent Flate Rates of $14.90 an hour the charge out rate is discounted.

The first $14.50  is charged out at 1.6 times that is $23.20. The amount above the $14.50  and up to the agreed wage is charged out at  a reduced rate of 1.3 times.

For example an Apprentice paid $18.00 an hour will be charged out at $27.75. This is made up of $23.20 for the first $14.50 and then $4.55 for the other $3.50.

A complete set of wage and charge out rates is in the Host Employers portal under "Hot Stuff". To access this portal you need to be a Host Employer who has registered to log on to the portal.
