Plumbing, Drainlaying & Gasfitting

Licensed plumbers, drainlayers and gasfitters assemble, install and repair the pipes, fixtures and fittings that supply water and gas, or remove wastes. Whether this is on large commercial construction sites or in residential households, plumbing, drainlaying and gasfitting is a hands-on trade which requires the ability to problem solve and manage technical issues.

The trade has a significant shortage of skilled labour, driving demand for qualified tradespeople and heightening future salary potential. Additionally, due to the Christchurch rebuild and Auckland construction boom, employment prospects for plumbers, drainlayers and gasfitters is expected to remain strong.

An ATT plumbing, drainlaying and gasfitting apprenticeship is structured over 5 years (up to 10,000 hours) of on-the-job work experience with your host business, as well as 18 week-long block courses (and night classes where applicable). On completion of the required unit standards you will achieve the New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing , Drainlaying and Gasfitting Level 4. Once licensed, you can further your qualification to become a certified plumber, drainlayer and gasfitter. Jaycob Walker

Jaycob Walker is an ATT plumbing and gasfitting apprentice, hosted by Laser Plumbing East Tamaki. He says it’s a very active trade with lots of variety, which is what he likes. “The day in the life of a plumbing apprentice is very hands on - you are constantly learning and dealing with different situations all the time.”

“Working as a plumber and gasfitter allows you to take a step back and look at your work, and take pride in what you have done... I like being able to fix things and solve problems.” Its hard work, but Jaycob knows it will all pay off in the end. “The more I learn, the more I will know in the future - which will help me to become the best plumber and gasfitter I can be.”

“ATT has contributed immensely to my apprenticeship, they have been with me every step of the way helping to make sure I'm on the right track”.
